Wayforward announced they will release Sigma Star Saga on modern platforms and PC via Steam in 2025. Sigma Star Saga was initially released on Game Bay Advanced from Bandai Namco; the game is being ported using Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engen to produce a high-quality port of the title for players. Further, the developer confirmed there will be a Game Boy Advance-compatible repro cart available with the playable version of the game on it.
Sigma Star Saga offers a distinctive blend of top-down planetary exploration and side-scrolling shoot-’em-up space battles. Players assume the role of Allied Earth Federation pilot Ian Recker, who infiltrates the alien Krill Empire as a double agent in a desperate bid to save humanity. Navigating this dual allegiance, Recker collaborates with both humans and Krill, exploring six planets with an expanding arsenal of tools and abilities. The gameplay shifts into high gear when players jump into the cockpit for intense shmup-style combat, utilizing over 70 different Gun Data items to battle enemy forces.
The game features stunning pixel-art graphics and a captivating soundtrack, enhancing the experience of epic boss battles and a twist-filled narrative with multiple endings. As players traverse the game, they can explore using tools like the Scanner, Krill Boots, and Wings, adding depth to the top-down exploration segments. The story’s branching paths ensure that each playthrough can offer a new perspective, making Sigma Star Saga a compelling return to form for fans of the original GBA classic.
